Koskela #1 - lighting love affair

May 31, 2012

Photos taken by Natalie Hayllar {eat read love} at Koskela

A lovely Sunday, a visit to Sydney's Rosebery, and my love affair with Koskela, Tili Wiru lighting and Kitchen By Mike has begun!

Koskela, the brain child of Russel Koskela and Sasha Titchkosky, is the home of beautiful contemporary Australian furniture, housed in a huge century old converted warehouse (the old Rosella Canning Factory) in Sydney's Rosebery.  Eco-friendly recycled timbers have been converted into tables and benches, exposed brick walls and beams, stunning lighting, and bright and bold soft furnishings are all displayed perfectly in this space. Did I mention they stock fabulous designs from my favs Bonnie and Neil and Pony Rider too (need I say more!). I fell love with the very cute and fat timber wombat in the kids room area.

The stunning lighting (pictured above) is part of the Tili Wiru collection - a collaboration between the Tjanpi Desert Weavers and Koskela. Such bright, earthy colours and nature inspired patterns. The Tjanpi Desert Weavers was set up by the Ngaanyatjarra Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Women’s Council in 1995 in  Central Australia. Grasses collected by women have been weaved into baskets, sculptures and for the first time lighting. It really is a breathtaking collection and looks amazing on a backdrop of exposed brick industrial walls in the Koskela showroom.

Oh and did I mention the very best part....after you have finished perusing the showroom,  you can walk about ten steps to devour some fresh and flavoursome eats from Kitchen by Mike. Such a cool, buzzing space, daily menu, artisan bread, coffee, cake, and delicious comfort food. Whats not to love! Obviously popular with the local inner city set if the food queue is anything to go by and tables in hot demand (more on KBM later on the blog).

How exciting to find such awesome eats and loves under one roof and so close to home. I will most definitely be returning for another Koskela/Kitchen by Mike fix very soon. More pics on Koskela #2

outdoor dreaming...

May 24, 2012

Summer is a little way off. I feel like these gorgeous Autumn days we are having lately is a little gift back from nature, after one of the most 'unsummery' Sydney Summers on record.   Heima have saved the day with some beautiful outdoor inspiration to remind me of lazy summer days. In the latest collection, inspired by Summer hues and outdoor stories, Heima have successfully blended the familiar with new adventures.

Inspired by....
Carefree themes of friendships | Vintage textures and fresh sounds | Sailing through slow afternoons on fields of amber | Tangerine tones and lush greens | A sea of teal sprinkled with sun | Droplets of neon colors | Handmade with love on a canvas of dreams | Renewed inspiration and flare |

Heima have stepped a little out of their comfort zone with this new collection, blending an eclectic mix of bold colour, floral patterns, and soft forms. With curves inspired by a couple's embrace and union, the signature love seat and arm chair is wrapped in floral patterns to celebrate nature. I am totally in love with these bright, bold and beautiful designs especially the tangerine desk, the 'today will be amazing' print, petite floral love seat and the turquoise chest of drawers is a fav. This is a collection that has been made with love

la dolce vita

La Dolce Vita is Italian for 'The Sweet Life' or 'The Good Life'. I started eat read love as a place to share my passions, inspirations, and the good things in life, and also a great way to unwind and relax. When I saw this lovely La Dolce Vita signage on the wall at the lovely Lisa Madigan studio last weekend I was reminded why I started writing, blogging and taking photos in the first place! Have met some fabulous, creative and talented people along the way and there is certainly no shortage of inspiration living in Sydney and on the South Coast!

So a very short and sweet post this week, its been a busy week juggling work, boys and blogging, BUT I have some fabulous new stories to share with you in the coming weeks...a little 'unleashing your creative flow', dinner in a bakery, going 'naturale', and a wedding or two perhaps. Oh and some fabulous foodies finds just for you.... so stay tuned.

Have a great week.

Walking The Rocks

May 21, 2012

photos by Natalie Hayllar

What a fabulous day exploring my very own beautiful city of Sydney on foot last Saturday. Eight hours spent wandering through Sydney's iconic Rocks Markets, Botanical Gardens, Opera House and Walsh Bay taking photos along the way, learning a few photography tricks with Focus 10. My lovely friend Toni, the beautiful subject in my pics, was my partner in crime as we walked the pavement, capturing all that Sydney has to offer - late afternoon sun, food markets, the stunning Opera House and some of the hidden backstreets of the rocks. I felt like a tourist in my own city. I am now overwhelmed by how much there is too learn about digital photography, but very excited and having so much fun learning! A lovely amber ale and tomato and bocconcini pizza at the Lord Nelson was the perfect end to a wonderful day, and of course the most delicious Guylian Cafe hot choc and macaron for the drive home.

It is days like this that remind me of why I live in Sydney....and why I want to keep taking photos!

Breaking news...a little birdy told me that the divine and iconic Parisian 'House of Macaron's' Laduree might be coming to Sydney. Is it true? Let me find out more and come back to you. In the meantime you can drool over their beautiful website. This exciting news won't stop me visiting Laduree in Paris in Sept...but wouldn't it be nice to be able to pop into the Sydney store for a little French fix anytime I like.

YIPPEE it is true....happy days

cute and cosy 'jailhouse cups'

oh so cool 'snack clutch' and 'picnic clutch'

This unusually warm May weather has me in a nautical mood. I have ALWAYS loved navy & white stripes in clothing and interiors. Pablo Picasso and JP Gaultier mastered the art of wearing the nautical sailor tee. Right now I am totally in love with these nautical inspired beauties from south coast style icon Roots & Wings. These 'jailhouse cups' truly remind me of hot chocolates by the campfire as a kid. Love the mac covers and the very cool 'snack clutch' and sassy 'picnic clutch' for something a little more substantial!

Some gorgeous gift ideas for Mothers Day with a touch of 'by the sea'. All from the Roots & Wings online store.
