Heart at Home

Aug 30, 2012

Heart at Home
Wear your 'heart on your sleeve' at home. Here is a few of my favourite things in my own lounge and hall area. I love to add little pops of colour in the corners of my home, to display collections of special things from my travels to create little clusters of love. Books from France, paintings from Peru, teacups from China mixed with lovely local delights. Little reminders of treasured moments, scattered here and there reminders of faraway places that have captured the heart.  A few favourite things to bring the heart into my home - framed rugs from Peru, bright coloured Materialistic cushions from local Sydney designer Angie McCarthy and my extra special Ruby Star Traders purple inlay table is my absolute favourite. Nothing really matches - its all mixed patterns, bold colours and neutrals blended together to create my own little eclectic space. My very sweet EDIT hand painted kids chair makes a perfect little bookshelf when not it use by Mr 2 & Mr 4. Bright fresh cut flowers always add the finishing touch to any room to make it really feel homely. So...why not unpack those old boxes stored away and find those little treasures to remind you of special times and places. You would be amazed how lovely old things look when mixed with newer more contemporary pieces....

Flowers by lovely Beth at Inbud. Thank you so much to Angie from Materialistic and to D&D from Charbella in Cronulla for all your help and support with the shoot.

Wharf Rd on the Shoalhaven

The NSW south coast is set to receive another foodies hot spot as restauranteur and chef David Campbell opens his second regional restaurant on Nowra’s Shoalhaven River, simply called Wharf Rd. Taking ownership of the historic Harbour Master’s residence in 2011, David Campbell and partner Nicole Campbell plan to breathe new life into the iconic waterfront building, creating a gracefully rustic space that showcases fresh local south coast produce, Australian-crafted wines and one fabulous view. Working with local interior designer Rebecca Riles (Bec has featured many times on the blog), the contemporary riverside space will seat 130 customers, with a bar perfect for dropping in for a bite to eat and a glass of wine, two private dining rooms and a main dining space opening up onto the sparkling Shoalhaven waterfront. Offering seasonal, local and sustainable produce, the menu will present fresh local seafood as well as Wagyu beef and alpaca from nearby farms, dry-aged on premises in a custom Himalayan salt brick cool room and cooked on a custom built South American-style Parrila.

“As Neil Perry once said, ‘cooking with fire is one of man’s greatest pleasures.’ Great produce, treated simply and with respect is the aim of the game here.” says Campbell.

Campbell has worked with some of Sydney's best such as Kylie Kwong and Tetsuya Wakuda in the past before turning successful restaurateur, opening another of my regular eat read love haunts 'The Book Kitchen' in Surry Hills, and Hungry Duck in Berry. Wharf Rd. is what living in, or travelling to the south coast is all about – relaxed atmosphere with a cracking view, sharing with friends and family alongside simple, delicious food and great wine. We will cheers to that!  Wharf Rd. officially opens its doors next week and I cannot wait to check it out. Stay tuned to the blog and facebook page for my review.

David Gunn - Bespoke timber

Image 1: David Gunn. All other photos by Natalie Hayllar {eat read love}

I recently caught up with David from David Gunn Designs on one of my regular South Coast shopping haunts. David makes the COOLEST solid wood handcrafted bespoke furniture - with natural finishes and exposed joinery using new and recycled timbers. A skilled cabinetmaker, David has worked in the furniture industry for more than seventeen years, from detailed  joinery on large scale commercial projects to hand crafted one-off designs. Cronulla locals might also recongnise his funky solid wooden blocks as seen in local designer store Roar

And another new project that is close to my heart - David has been hard at work making all the solid timber benches and woodwork for the brand spanking new Wharf Rd restaurant on the Shoalhaven River opening next week.  I cant wait to get my first glimpse this weekend - with the work of Interior Designer Rebecca Riles and culinary delights from acclaimed Chef David Campbell, this is bound to be cool coastal dining at its best! I will be sharing updates from my visit to Wharf Rd this weekend, but here is a little sneak peek...

Pear & cake - fun food styling

Aug 18, 2012

PHOTOS; Matt Johnson. Styling: Madeline Johnson

Combining my two loves - food and photography!
Food styling is something I adore. I love reading mags like Donna Hay, Gourmet Traveller and Kinfolk and drooling over the delicious food shots in blogs like Call Me Cupcake and What Katie Ate. So I decided to grab some fresh fruit, textured berries, grapes and gorgeous pears and have a bit of styling fun with Mr & Mrs Johnson. Mads and MJ have the magic touch - what that pair can create with a pretty pink plate, a cake and a few pears! Plenty more from our eat read love @home shoot coming on the blog soon.

Young Hearts, Run Free...
As promised the beautiful new collection YOUNG HEARTS from Blacklist Studio Prints is now just a click away. Made by dreamers for dreamers, all 100% Australian made and part of a limited edition collection that you just have to have! My absolute favourite is the Young Hearts Wall Flagblack cotton linen, hand silk screen printed and finished with white cotton and light blue vintage binding. You can buy this all ready to hang with timber oak baton and cotton rope. The vintage Take Me to South America Map pulls on my own heartstrings, taking me back to happy adventures in Peru & Chile, and perfect for the travel nostalgics among us. A great reminder to follow our travel dreams.

The Choose Your Own Letters custom letters prints would make THE most perfect gift for a special someone. Great for an engagement, wedding or anniversary surprise, or if you just want to add a personal touch to any room in your home. And who doesn't love a limited edition cushion! Last but not least the very cool Photocopy Palm and Turkish Delight Cushions in Blacklist washed prints are bold but not too brash, and have such a lovely vintage look. I could go on all day....

Jaynie & Nathan Johnson, the creative duo behind Blacklist Studio Prints, featured in this weeks {Style Sessions With} on the blog. If you missed it you can check out the interview here...

Have a great week

Style Sessions: Blacklist Studio Prints

Aug 11, 2012

STYLE SESSIONS WITH: Blacklist Studio Prints
Young hearts do run free and the lovely, local and exceptionally creative design duo Jaynie and Nathan Johnson from Blacklist Studio Prints are proof of that! In this week's {Style Sessions With} Jaynie Johnson kindly share a little of her own design inspiration and some favourite eats, reads and loves on the blog. Oh and I am just a bit excited by the new range 'Young Hearts' that has just launched this week!

How would you describe the Blacklist signature style? We are often referred to as 'coastal cool'....not sure about the cool part, but we are definitely a bit of a blend between coastal, industrial, functional and relaxed....we definitely don't take ourselves, or our spaces too seriously.

What is the inspiration behind your to the sea rangeDefinitely the sea, travel, our friends and that crazy little thing called love.

What one design feature would you like people to remember about your designs. The high quality finishes of leather and linen and the custom yardage designs we created. This range has also seen us release small runs of very limited edition screen prints we've printed in the studio.

What's hot in Australian design right now? Neon seems to be everywhere. which is cool, but a bit too trendy for us....it's nice to see that salvaged timbers are big, it's great for the earth. And I definitely think that monochromatic and pastels will be huge.  There is something so lovely about the softness of pastels mixed with the edgier look of a monochrome base.

Which designers/stylists send you weak at the knees? Definitely our dear friend Mr Jason Grant. He has his style nailed, and it is relaxed and uncluttered.  I love Sarah Ellison's work and the work of Akin....they blow my mind constantly.

What inspires you to get out of bed in the morning? My family....they are my everything....they are my full stop, comma, comma, no returns.

If you could travel anywhere tomorrow where would it be? Bali...and then New York....and then back to Bali (can you tell we love Bali?)

Describe your perfect Sydney weekend? We are real homebodies so we love being at home, reading, painting, dancing, playing in the yard and walking down to our corner store for red frogs. We love to have friends over for Soup Sunday's. Nathan makes the best soups every Sunday. We also like to stroll up to the mall and the Sea....we definitely are easily pleased.

EATING: We are a little obsessed with Reuben Hills', the 'not Reuben Reuben'
READING: 'French Children Don't Throw Food' (Jaynie) and  'Glimmer' (Nathan)
LOVING: Designing our next collection 'Young Hearts', & calendar count down for Bali....
BEST COFFEE: HAM & Grind when in Cronulla...
Huge thanks to Jaynie and Nathan for joining our {Style Sessions With...} It seems we have a shared love for Reuben Hills - the salted caramel milkshake is to die for, and HAM is my fav place for Friday coffees. The new 'Young Hearts' range launches this week (we will share on Aug 13), oh and considering I am heading to France with two little boys in a month, a copy of 'French Children Don't Throw Food' might come in handy! Check out the Blacklist Studio Prints online shop for the new range!

Call me cupcake by Linda Lomelino
Whenever I need baking inspiration or some beautiful desserts to drool over, this is the first place I look. In my opinion Call me cupcake blog by Linda Lomelino is one of the most beautiful blogs around. The recipe index is a great place to start. Even more exciting is that Linda has recently gathered all of her favourites recipes and images in this beautiful book (shown above).

Fifty Shades of Grey...in the home!
Many of us have read the book. Some of us loved it, some hated it. One thing is certain when it comes to matters of the home - soft grey interiors are just divine! The colour scheme of many a Hampton's home and Scandinavian interiors, it was great to stumble upon some lovely grey style by Helene Kofoed Sørensen, styled by Diana LovringEmma's Design Blog is also a great source of home inspiration. Hope you enjoy some of these lovely rooms that do Fifty Shades of Grey just beautifully! Enjoy your weekend.

Friday Reads - August Book Club

Winter is the perfect time to curl up with a blanket, a glass of red and a good book. I am a huge fan of interior books and historical fiction, and I don't mind the odd easy read romance in between. Here's whats on my reading wishlist right now...

Lifestyle & Interiors - for armchair escapism and interior styling at its best, I can't wait for Sibella Court's new book Bowerbird to come out in November. Another favourite stylist Hans Blomquist has the most beautiful photography/styling online so I can only imagine how lovely the book The Natural Home will be (add that to the Christmas list!) A huge fan of Kinfolk Magazine's food styling, and the August issue of Country Style mag has a great feature on the South Coast - Mollymook/Milton and the lovely Little Dandelion wool rugs on the front cover!

Romance at heart - for the Fifty Shades of Grey fans, Bared to You by Sylvia Day is apparently the next best thing on the New York Times besteller list. I am hearing through the grapevine this may perhaps be better, more romance, less kink and well written. I may have to get my hands on this to see what all the fuss is about. For the romantics among us I recently read Beautiful Disaster by Jamie McQuire - ok so I will admit it is a very 'Twilightesque' teen fiction (sans the vampires) but slightly addictive and a very easy weekend read for something in between more serious fiction.

Historical Fiction- I have also added two books to the list that have been recommended to me recently - The Little Coffee Shop of Kabul and acclaimed author Kate Morton's the Forgotten Garden. Finally, a huge fan of historical fiction, The Book Thief is one of my all time favourites, and I will definitely read it again. A beautiful and moving book by local legend Markus Zusak. Expect tears! And last but not least I cannot wait to get my hands on Australian author, Belinda Alexandra's latest book. With a Russian theme and expected out in 2013 this is sure to be a winner!

This should keep you busy for a while. Let me know what you loved, what you didn't and any new reads you want to recommend.

Happy reading!
