An Artist in New York City with LISA MADIGAN

NYC Street Style Through the Eyes of an Artist - with LISA MADIGAN
The streets of NYC have inspired many. I dream of returning to NYC daily. I am already planning a milestone trip #NYC40. I recently caught up with artist LISA MADIGAN for a chat upon her return from a life affirming trip to NYC.  Literally within a week of packing up her beautiful little shop in Berry, Lisa jumped on a plane & flew half way around the world to fire up her next exciting chapter as an artist & soak up all that New York has to offer, a place she says had been 'tugging at her heart strings for a while'. Here is a little of what Lisa had to say about the Big Apple that so many of us lust for ...

"It's true, New York is built upon the stuff dreams are made of. You can feel the star dust & sense the shimmer of champagne at every turn. It's grand, it's raw, it's pulsing, it's impulsive, it's intellectual & it's real. You breathe the dust & smell the sweat that's made it happen. You sense the punches she's endured & feel the community that's lifted her back onto her feet to shine again, perhaps even brighter than before.
I love that New York didn't happen by accident, it was intentional & I love that that intention has attracted some of the worlds leading minds & continues to do so. Lady Liberty is alive & well, standing strong & inspiring still.
I love the cultural diversity, I love the pace, I love the lights, I love the grit & the graffiti & I love the air lock doors that open into luxurious trinket boxes & worlds of wonder. I love the little bar that was on the corner of our block that every day had fresh market flowers in jars & played great music & made great cocktails, the kind of cocktails that involve mystery & theatre & a barman with true passion & personality. I love the intermittent weather & the winds that blow your umbrella inside out. I love MoMA. I love the Met. I love the Guggenheim & the paper partitions I had to steal a glimpse through of the atrium. I love Woody Allen & I love that our apartment had a projector so we could watch Manhattan in Manhattan. I love the magical places you find that offer no curb side trace of their existence. I love that people love their dogs & tend to their community gardens.
I felt at home. I felt tenderness & hardship & everything in between. I felt an unabashed honesty, no apologies, no pretensions. I felt embraced. I felt at ease. I felt that warm liberty glow. I felt optimism pushing through any darkness. I felt light.
It's no secret, I have ignited a life long love affair with the big apple.
I can't wait to go take another bite.

Lisa and I are working on a wonderful little collaboration together in July. Bringing great food, fabulous friends and inspiring artwork together. Stay tuned for all the details on the blog/instagram #eatreadlovepopup

Juniper Hearth - Berry, South Coast*

Juniper Hearth

You know I love talking about the South Coast every chance I get and always looking to uncover hidden gems for my fellow eat, read, lovers. In a constant state of wanderlust whenever I travel down to this little country-coastal haven, I also love the opportunity to work with creative people who have been able to turn their true passion into a way of life. After extensive travel to India and Nepal and a true love for textiles and knitting, this is where the story of Noreen Giles, and the creation of Juniper Hearth begins.

Pioneering the concept of a ‘lifestyle’ store, Juniper Hearth is a gorgeous boutique, established in 2002 in the picturesque village of Berry on the NSW South Coast, one of my favourite places to eat read love south of Sydney. Tucked away in a beautiful 1920s gallery-style store on Alexandra Street, it is one of Berry’s best kept shopping secrets. In addition to the store, last year Juniper Hearth also launched its e-Emporium, bringing a finely edited collection of its ‘signature’ wares for delivery to your door.

Juniper Hearth is for lovers of the eclectic, handcrafted and exotic. If there is a touch of nomad in you, and you love handmade luxury then a visit to Juniper Hearth will definitely lift the spirit and sooth the soul. This Winter fine hand printed scarves, embroidered kaftans and pure wool throws from India rub shoulders with colourful decorative pieces for the home from Nepal. Unique pieces to treasure which also make perfect gifts for loved ones.

All of the wool scarves and throws that Noreen has sourced are made from 100% fine wool, so soft to handle, lightweight and warm and perfect for cold winter days and crisp mornings. Depending on your mood you can choose between rich warm reds and oranges, or softer sophisticated blues and greens, shop the full collection here. Juniper Hearth also carries classic cashmere sweaters in cream, camel, grey and black and the most divine silk and cashmere hand printed scarves from India. The colours are breathtaking.

I am not sure if it is the the bakeries, the dappled light, the fresh air or the Artisan finds that keep me coming back to Berry, maybe it is all of them combined. Next time you are down South, be sure to stop in to Juniper Hearth or if you can't wait, you can head over to the e-emporium for a little armchair escapism and start your shopping now.

Shipping in Australia is now FREE!

Catherine Saxelby launches fabulous new recipe book about Ancient Grains - Whole Food Recipes for the Modern Table.  I was lucky enough to attend the launch of Ancient Grains - the beautiful new nutrition/recipe book by my good friend and inspiring colleague Catherine Saxelby. The boutique wholefoods supermarket About Life in Rozelle hosted the lovely book launch - a wonderful evening with fellow foodies and nutrition colleagues to learn all about 'Ancient Grains' and sample some of the delicious recipes from the new book. Healthy food need not taste boring and the recipe developers of 'Ancient Grains' have perfected the balance of delicious, fresh ingredients with wholesome grains. Who knew that cooking with ancient grains offers such a rich palette of flavourful wholegrain meals! With everything you could ever want to know about grains, from Quinoa to Oats, Barley to Spelt, this new book not only has a comprehensive grains directory but over 100 recipes including delicious dishes suitable for vegans, vegetarians, meat lovers as well as low GI and gluten free recipes.

Each and every recipe has been beautifully styled by Stephanie Souvlis, with stunning food photography by Andre Martin, and I think you will agree that the cover shot is sensational!  With so much conflicting nutrition information around, Catherine has mastered the art of delivering easy to understand, credible nutrition advice that still allows you to enjoy your food. Catherine also has one of the best food and nutrition blogs around, full of inspirational recipes, myth busters, fast facts, sound nutrition advice, food reviews and of course the BEST salad recipes. Bringing Bloggers Together as Blog Society Launches at Vivid Sydney
The last few weeks have been a whirlwind of exciting phone calls and event planning. It all started with an email from a lovely lady by the name of Jaclyn Carlson. I had known Jac through her blog LITTLE PAPER TREES and we had crossed paths many times through the lifestyle blogging circle but when I got an email asking if I wanted to help co-host a KINFOLK Sydney event I was beyond excited. Hard to top that! Well Jac then asked if I would like to help her run a blogging workshop at the launch of her brand new project BLOG SOCIETY at the Vivid Sydney festival. Of course I said YES! Well life hasn't really been the same since that email. Busy weeks of planning, collecting props and brainstorming ideas has all paid off for Jac - the launch of Blog Society was a huge success. Hard to beat an afternoon of styling, taking photos and sharing ideas with fellow bloggers, and the opportunity to listen to the story of two very beautiful and inspirational Australian interiors bloggers - Jen Bishop (INTERIORS ADDICT) and Viv Mansour (ISH & CHI).  The most wonderful thing out of this entire experience has been the lovely people I have met along the way. Teaming up again with friend and super stylist Madeline Johnson (THE LOVED ONES) and acclaimed photographer Sam McAdam-Cooper (The Quintessential Magazine, Inside Out, Country Style, Vogue Living) it was bound to be a pretty special afternoon. Loved watching the other style trio - Jessica Bellef (TEMPLE & WEBSTER), photographer Milton Gan (MILTON GAN PHOTOGRAPHY) and gorgeous photographer and blogger EMMA SCAMELL (who also took all of these amazing pics!!)

A big shout out also to some local lovelies - thanks to my friends at fashion central ROAR who provided the beautiful AESOP products for our beauty section, THE HORSE for the beyond gorgeous watches and leather goods, and BLACKLIST STUDIO PRINTS and WHITE HORSE HOME for the lovely cushions and homewares.

Jac - what an inspiring and wonderful individual you are. You are most certainly helping Australian bloggers reach the stars. It has been a pleasure working with you on these projects and I look forward to our next exciting collab.....oh how wish I could share as they are VERY exciting indeed. But you will just have to wait.... :)
