Sydney Style & Sandstone - Balmain Wharf Apartments

Apr 28, 2013

Sydney & Sandstone at Balmain Wharf Apartments.
I was lucky enough to stay at Balmain Wharf Apartments again recently and host my very first eat read love #popupdinner. What a wonderful night...(more coming on that later....). Balmain is such an amazing area to explore, steeped in history and the very best #eatreadloves around, it was so much fun wandering around town, getting flowers, choosing wines and exploring the little corners of old Sydney in preparation for an intimate harbourside dinner with friends. If you are ever looking for a wonderful, central and quintessentially Sydney experience, then Balmain Wharf Apartments is a fabulous choice. Exposed Sandstone, luxury fittings and breathtaking views of Sydney Harbour. Framed by the Harbour Bridge, the apartments are located directly opposite the ferry with easy access to the centre of city, the Rocks and an easy walk up Darling Street to the many cafes, pubs and bars, it makes a great base for exploring Sydney for a weekend, and would be excellent for business travellers wanting a more homely experience for longer stays. Euphoria Cafe just up the hill is awesome for breakfast and great coffee with full harbour bridge views. Cant wait to return later this year for another exciting #eatreadlove event ... stay tuned for that one.

Cosy Up - French Chalet Interior Love

Apr 22, 2013

All Images Sourced from Manners

Imagine waking up in this amazing winter chalet in the French Alps! A little 'Monday night cosy up' on the blog. With Winter well and truly on its way, cold crisp nights and dreams of curling up in a snowy mountain lodge - I think I was meant to find this place!  Once a farmhouse, transformed into a stunning chalet by Lionel Jadot, I just couldn't wait until Friday for 'Its Friday It's French' to post this one. Imagine cosying up by the fire with a glass of red and sitting in that reading room - WOW - all those books, all that timber! The mosaic tiles in the kitchen are an unexpected and beautiful delight and I love the eclectic mix of vintage leather and antique wears with more modern lighting and funky colours popping up everywhere. Oh and those cosy rugs on the chairs... what a place to #eatreadlove. For more amazing interior inspiration pop on over to Manners

{STYLE SESSIONS WITH...} French By Design

Apr 18, 2013

(STYLE SESSIONS WITH... } Si Mazouz curator of the French By Design blog
I admit, I have a major blog crush. For those of you who have followed eat read love from the beginning this will come as no surprise. French by design  remains a constant source of inspiration to me, even before I started blogging I would often stay up late scrolling through the beautiful images on the French by design blog.  Making a regular appearance in my blog segment 'It's Friday, It's French', French By Design is at the top of the blogroll, not to mention very handy in the lead up to last year's eat read love tour of Paris.

With a shared passion for all things French, a deep love for Paris and living by the mantra “travel is the only thing you can buy that makes you richer" it is an honour to interview French Style icon Siham Mazouz the curator of the French By Design blog and her online vintage Etsy shop by the same name. This French girl expatriated in the U.S. East Coast likes to mix and match styles and eras to create an eclectic feel to interiors. A self-confessed vintage and design addict, Si likes interiors that “think outside the box” and compiles daily a selection of interiors, house tours, DIY projects or quotes on the French By Design blog. Si also contributes to other beautiful blogs such as Sfgirlbybay.  Si shares her story, her signature 'eclectic chic' style and a few eat, read, loves of her own.

Where and when did the French By Design story begin? The French By Design story began when I left my marketing job in France to move to America. My daughters did not speak a word of English back then, so I decided being more present at home was a better option for a while. I opened a small Etsy vintage shop and a blog to channel my creativity, and it grew way bigger than I had anticipated!

Describe your signature style? Eclectic chic. My style obeys no rule. I love to mix and match pieces from different eras, Scandinavian style with ethnic accents, industrial vintage with modern design pieces. It just has to speak true to my heart, feel good, and match my [or my client’s] personality.

Designers/stylists that send you weak at the knees? I love Paola Navone and her free spirited and easy casual style. Her personality transpires in the interiors she styles. I also love Jacqueline Morabito and her unique approach to light, whites and vintage pieces.

What inspires you to get out of bed in the morning? My family, always first, and my job. I love what I do and being my own boss. Hours are long, work is hard, but it’s so rewarding!

Summer or Winter?  Summer, without a doubt. I grew up in Morocco, Africa, by the ocean, so heat, ocean breeze and SPF sunscreen resonate much more to me than coats, sweaters and snow shovels.

Local coffee stop love?  I don’t have such a routine. I invested in a very good coffee maker and milk frother, so I prefer having a friend over and play the barrista myself!

If you could travel anywhere tomorrow where would it be & why? I am actually packing for Paris, my favorite city in the whole wide world. I never get tired of Paris and rediscover it like it’s the first time, every single time. There’s something so special to me about Paris. I read once a quote that said:

“travel is the only thing you can buy that makes you richer.”

I couldn’t agree more with this statement. There isn’t a place I wouldn’t actually travel to tomorrow if I had the chance to.

Eating: Sipping on an afternoon cappuccino

Reading: I need to make time for this. Between the paper magazines, interior design books and international digital magazines issues I go through for my work, I don’t have much time for a good book. But I miss it, so I’ll need to make time for it.

Loving: The first signs of Spring and the flowering shrubs I see every morning when I jog or walk with my dog. We get spoiled with a beautiful outdoor scenery in North Carolina.

Your perfect weekend is…. spent with my loved ones, lunching on the patio, barbecuing, drinking good wine, catching up around a homemade meal with visiting friends.

Thank you so much Si for your time and for your daily inspiration. Merci Merci. Natalie x x x

Spoil Mum @ Steersons - Mothers Day Dining in Sydney

Sophisticated Mothers Day Dining in Sydney at Steerson's Bridge Street
You know I LOVE Sydney dining, and getting to taste the menu at some of Sydney's lovely restaurants is the best part of my life as an 'eat read lover'! On Friday I was invited to preview the upcoming Mothers Day Lunch Menu at Steersons - most definitely somewhere special for your Mothers Day.  Not only was the food sensational, but the location is fabulous, in the heart of Bridge St Sydney. I have always loved this iconic original Sydney building and wandered past many, many times. As a history lover, I was delighted with the inside of the restaurant too - the environment is one of elegant sophistication and opulence dating back to 1901.

Steersons definitely makes for a unique Sydney dining experience, housed in one of Sydney's iconic buildings - the Burns Philp building at 7 Bridge Street is heritage listed and built at the turn of the century. It is a mixture of Gothic and Romanesque styles, predominantly of sandstone like the other Bridge St properties of that time. Celebrated architect Arthur Anderson was responsible for most of Sydney’s original Harbourside warehouses, and the Burns Philp Building is one of only a few remaining properties still standing which makes it even more special. The stunning interior features elaborate cedar-work, vaulted ceilings and brass chandeliers. The view from the mezzanine is special (can also be booked out for groups and private functions), taking you back in time to a place of decadence and sophistication. (Burns Philp has its roots in the production and distribution of delicious ingredients, once being a major player in Australian food manufacturing)

Our preview of the Mothers Day Menu started with a taste of the delicious entrees - Honey Glazed Confit of Pork Belly with Red Wine Vinegar, Shallot's and Lemon, a taste of the Duck Liver Pate with Orange, Plum Compote and Crunchy Toast and the Spicy Fried Calamari and Zucchini Fritters with Lemon Aioli. For main I HAD to have the signature Steersons Steak - what can I say I am a steak girl! Steersons is of course well known for its delicious steak, and serves one of the largest and best quality ranges of beef on offer in Sydney. Southern Grain Fed Angus, Hereford & Shorthorn breeds from Wagga Wagga, graded in the top 1% of Australian Beef. Dry aged beef sourced from Havericks results in steaks that are superior in tenderness with a buttery taste and nutty aroma. Dessert was a standout - the Passionfruit Semifreddo with Coconut Meringue and Pomegranate was sensational the White and Dark Choc Mousse with Cream Cheese Ice-cream, Honeycomb and Lavender looked as pretty as it tasted.

So if you are up for something a little special and sophisticated this Mothers Day, then Steersons Bridge Street is taking Mothers Day bookings now for lunch. Steersons Lime Street at King Street Wharf will also be open on Mother's Day serving the same special lunch menu.

You can also join the ‘Win a Dinner for 2’ at Steersons promotion on Facebook, running until May 6th.

* I was a guest of Steersons.

The Quintessential Magazine Edition #3

'Me and My' Antique Wooden Desk - Quintessential Magazine Edition 3 launches this week. What a thrill to be included in this months The Quintessential Magazine. As a lover of all things Quintessential Duckeggblue in Balmain, it was such a honour to be a part of Edition #3. Such a great morning at home with Sam McAdam-Cooper. I love my old desk - a lovely Balinese Antique that I picked up at Zamandulu on one of our regular Mollymook trips. Although I am much more comfortable behind the camera than in front of it, spending some time getting ready with the very sweet Jade from Jade lee Hair and Make Up and Stylist Madeline Johnson was so much fun. If you haven't subscribed already then you must sign up for The Quintessential Magazine - it is beautiful from start to finish. Thank you to Leanne for this wonderful opportunity. Natalie x

French Travel Tales and Treasures by Sam McAdam-Cooper
I recently had the pleasure of spending the morning at my home with photographer Sam McAdam-Cooper. We were doing an exciting little project for the Quintessential Magazine....(more on that coming later) but I had to share some of the gorgeous shots Sam took for me of my favourite little things around the home. My travel memoirs, train tickets from Paris to Moret, my butter press (a treasured gift from Leanne at Quintessential Duckeggblue), my lucky little red cups from Merci paris, travel tins from our treasured Basque region and of course our family print block initials from Portobello Rd Markets. All of these little things remind me of special travels and special times with my boys, and what an honour to have Sam shoot these for me in her absolutely beautiful signature style. Sams photos have graced the covers of many of my fav mags including Inside Out, Country Style, the Quint Mag and more. Thanks Sam! I would also like to thank my lovely friend and stylist Madeline Johnson who helped me the entire morning on this day, and to the Sisters as well. You guys rock!
