EVENTS // Vivid Sydney - Blog Society: The Retreat, Sydney

Jun 19, 2014

Vivid Sydney: The Blog Society Retreat kicked off on a sparkling Sydney morning on May 24 at the iconic Museum of Contemporary Art.  Sydney bloggers were out in force, to learn more about the business of blogging, hearing personal stories from some of our best and well known Australian bloggers. There was also time to get a deeper understanding of the importance of getting your SEO right, the power of social media and monetizing your blog. All really useful stuff. I love being a part of this ever expanding community and get to talk to some of my online friends face to face. The Retreat was the perfect opportunity to reconnect with old friends and meet new friends, some of which I had admired from a far, some of which were keen to collaborate on future events.

I was fortunate (and lets face it a little nervous), to moderate a session on “Social Media, Blogging & Creative Business” with a panel of four inspiring and creative women – Lisa Tilse ( The Red Thread), Brook McArthy (Yoga Reach), Steph Stewart-Wilsin (Lipstick & Cake) and Cheri Flewell Smith from Ms Critique  all amazing, all unique, and with their very own story to tell. I wanted to share a little about each of these awesome women so that you might be able to follow them and their fabulous work in the future.

- Lisa Tilse, The Red Thread is a blogger, graphic designer, maker, fabric and pattern designer. Lisa has had her work and craft tutorials featured on numerous popular blogs, in over 50 magazines around the world, as well as contributing to a series of craft books. Lisa’s new digital magazine SCOUT is a reflection of her passion to create and to inspire others. Lisa has always lived a creative life and through her blog and work loves to inspire you to embrace and celebrate creativity - in yourself and in others.

- Brook McArthy founded Yoga Reach in 2008. Brooke is a writer, professional communicator, yoga teacher and mother to two little girls.  In between university studies, travels, and a two-year stint as a small group tour leader in south-east Asia, Brooke has worked in Public Relations learning the importance of staying ‘on message’, of clear and compelling communications, and the excitement, immediacy and measurement of online communications. Brook blogs about communication, creativity, yoga and social media as well as running e-courses, intensive face to face courses and coaching.

- Stephanie Stewart-Wilsin is the editor of Lipstick & Cake, the go-to lifestyle site for women, covering food, beauty, travel and lifestyle topics. Here you can find delicious recipes, read about the latest beauty news, tips and tricks. A place to be inspired to book the trip you’ve always wanted to go on and learn about the clever brains behind many of your favourite brands.

- Cheri Flewell-Smith of Ms Critiquea beauty, luxury and lifestyle blog that aims to chronicle the pursuit of a fabulous lifeno, not the kind you see on the Rich Kids of Instagrambut rather a curated cultural edit of newness. Attainable and aspirational. The experiences you can afford right now, with a sprinkling of the things you look forward to enjoying in the near future. An advertising art director by day, no longer content ‘just making ads’ Cheri has started tapping into three key research trends - more people looking for instant gratification; demanding full media transparency; and on the hunt for the next big thing. Hungry for ‘new’, Cheri’s goal is to be a  ‘Champion of Newness’, a one-stop shop for those with an insatiable appetite for news on the latest lip-gloss, greatest gadget,
newest nightclub and hippest happenings as they happen—all over the world.
Oh and did I mention the speaker line up. Monetizing Your Blog with Etsy, Steph Bond Hutkin of Bondville, Christina Butcher of Hair Romance, and Rachel MacDonald of In Spaces BetweenIns & Outs of SEO with Kristy Hughes, Saatchi & SaatchiSocial Media, Working With Brands with Lorraine MurphyThe Remarkables

It was an amazing day and an honour to be a part of it in my beautiful city of Sydney. Thank you to my blogging soul mate Jaclyn Carlson for asking me to part of this wonderful event. It was the same time exactly one year prior that I was with Jaclyn when she launched Blog Society at the VividSydney festival. I am immensely proud of all that has been achieved in such a short time and so grateful for providing so many opportunities to connect with our blogging and creative community.
