EAT // Patonga Pop Up Dinner

Sep 29, 2014

Pizza & Pilaf Pop Up in Patonga
Who says dinner parties have to be expensive and time consuming! We decided to create our very own a little Patonga Pop Up dinner on our recent girls weekend away. We picked olive branches from the garden for the table, we used whatever coloured plates, napkins and bowls we could muster up, hung some little glass lanterns from the grape vine and scattered coloured cushions and candles along the tables and chairs. To ensure the food prep and catering was as easy as possible for a relaxing girls weekend we brought some delicious food from Kamilla Johns catering in Sydney with us (which I can highly recommend!) A gorgeous little dinner party needn't cost a fortune or take long to set up - just use what you have available around you, mix and match colours, old and new and have some fun with it. We certainly did!

Ode to Frida Kahlo

The Blue Room - inspired by Mexican painter Frida Kahlo
This weeks blog post is inspired by Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, famous for her intriguing and deeply personal self portraits.

"I used to think I was the strangest person in the world but then I thought there are so many people in the world, there must be someone just like me who feels bizarre and flawed in the same ways I do. I would imagine her, and imagine that she must be out there thinking of me too. Well I hope that if you are out there and read this and know that, yes its true, I'm here and I'm just a strange as you"  Frida Kahlo

This is the Blue Room, otherwise known as the 'Frida Kahlo' room at a dear friend's private holiday home in Patonga. Last night I finally watched the movie Frida (2002) starring Salma Hayek, Alfred Molina and Geoffrey Rush, and loved it so much - I am now intrigued to find out as much as I can about this brilliant painter and inspiring women. I found this great resource at Artsy on Frida Kahlo if you want to read more.

LOVE // Eating, Reading & Sleeping in Patonga

A weekend of eating, reading and sleeping in Patonga
You know those weekends where you come home feeling relaxed, refreshed and inspired. This is where I stayed last week with two very dear lifelong friends. With seven kids between us and busy lives as working mums, we decided that a little time away would be good for the soul and to renew our creative energy. I think we saved ourselves and our husbands thousands of dollars of therapy just having those two long days of eating, reading and sleeping!! A place of serenity, inspiration and relaxation, I am so very lucky to have the opportunity to stay here at this perfect little private artists retreat in Patonga. Oh and the Blue Room (the Frida Kahlo room) is my absolute favourite!

TRAVEL // Rice Paddies & Rose Picnic, Bali

Eat Read Love had a Picnic in the Rice Paddies of Cepaka, Bali
Last week I was lucky enough to venture over to Villa Sungai, Bali with a beautiful and inspiring group of ladies for the very first international eat read love pop up dinner. To get us in the mood we decided to have our very own private picnic in the rice paddies of Cepaka nearby Villa Sungai. Here is a little sneak peek of what we got up to. It was such a treat to spend the afternoon with my gorgeous travelling companions Sophie Baker, Luisa Brimble, Lisa Madigan, Jaclyn Carlson and Nadean Richards sipping on Rose and watching the sun go down over the fields of gold. The staff at Villa Sungai truly went above and beyond to help us create this little magical moment - our very own 'eat pray love' moment in Bali. Stay tuned to the blog and my instagram @eatreadlover for more of the Bali Fun on the blog coming this month.

Ginger tea & Ginger Flowers at Villa Sungai in Bali
We seemed to spend a lot of time with ginger last week in Bali. From the stunning Ginger Flowers to freshly brewed ginger tea it certainly provided some gorgeous photo inspiration. I wanted to share a few special memories from our recent blogger retreat at Villa Sungai Bali. I loved spending the week with these incredible ladies. Sophie Baker and Nadean Richards looking gorgeous at the entry to Villa Sungai. Luisa Brimble sure knows how to do a great shot of afternoon tea from above. I will never forget Lisa holding those stunning pink ginger flowers freshly delivered to the Villa ready for the Eat Read love pop up dinner. Special times to treasure forever. More coming soon.

Lychee Martini Heaven at Villa Sungai Bali
I am not sure if there is any Lychees left in Bali after we visited last week. I think we might have used up the entire supply. Admit to perhaps having one too many of these delicious Lychee Martinis with my blogging soul sister Jaclyn Carlson from Blog Society. Here we are poolside sharing a couple at the start of the eat read love pop up dinner. I will be sure to share the recipe with you very soon. You will love them!

ARTIST IN PROFILE // James Gordon on Shopify

Artist and illustrator James Gordon launches his beautiful new collection on Shopify. I have been trying to write this post for a long time. In fact every time I do I can never quite find the words to do justice to this gorgeous man that I met on Hamilton Island last year. His name is James Gordon. I had the absolute treat of meeting James (Jimmie) at qualia (heaven on earth) and spent one of the most blissful weekends ever celebrating World Champagne Day (a tough gig I know but someone had to do it!) My first real life glimpse of Jimmie's paper art was the gorgeous centrepieces on the tables at the Vogue Living Champagne Dinner - a touch of Gatsby glam by the sea. Ever since this memorable weekend I have been following Jimmie's beautiful illustrations, paper artistry and his mountain adventures with Bob on instagram.

Jimmie is one of a kind - extremely talented, hilariously funny and endearing. He loves a lobster sandwich and a good horror novel too. In the early days Jimmie worked as a visual merchandiser at Georges in Sydney going on to start his own very successful Sydney event company as creative director of the James Gordon Workshop designing and styling some of Sydney's finest weddings, he even designed the iconic Collette Dinnigan logo too! Jimmie is also a talented paper artist and illustrator and creates the most elaborate and intricate designs out of paper. Of course I had to book in to one of Jimmie's Paper courses - learning to create a paper prawn after too many champagnes was also another memorable weekend for me in Byron Bay (Paper Runway SPLASH workshop in Byron Bay

So the exciting news I wanted to share today is that following the launch of the new collection at the Bangalow Museum last weekend, Jimmie has just launched his online store on shopify - which means that we can now all access his beautiful creations online. I hope you enjoy this little glimpse of his work and I definitely encourage you to take a look at Shopify and see for yourself. Its really really beautiful.

Jimmie has recently moved to Leura in the Blue Mountains for a tree change, and it seems that both he and his best friend Bob the dog are enjoying the country life very much. I loved reading this recent interview with Jimmie on the Design Files, with some gorgeous photos taken by my friend (and fellow Cronulla local Rachel Kara).  I caught up with James a little while back to ask him about his favourite eat, read, loves.  Of course its all in CAPS - we wouldn't expect anything else from Jimmie X X X
